Case of missing County woman brings expressions of love, hope and prayer

SEPT 1: Expressions of love, hope and prayer continue throughout Prince Edward County as community members express their shock and sadness that Elaine Jeffery is missing.

The 59-year-old Picton women has not been seen by family or friends since mid last week. The OPP requested the public’s assistance Tuesday, Aug. 30 and determined the disappearance “suspicious” by Wednesday morning.

A rental vehicle she was driving was located at her residence in Hallowell. The 2011 Mitsubishi RVR, red, four-door hatchback was bering an Ontario plate: BLXS 211. Elaine Jeffery is described as 5’7″ tall, about 175 pounds, medium build, having brown eyes and greying brown hair.

Heartfelt thoughts and prayers continue through countylive.ca comments with posts that express love for a dear friend, former co-worker and caring employee before she retired as a lab technician at Picton hospital. The comments express hope for a safe return and offer prayers for a family in this time of difficulty. Posts speak of Elaine as an active community volunteer, working with her church and at Ten Thousand Villages, downtown Picton.

Members of local, provincial and national power and sail squadrons are also trying to keep up-to-date with information on Jeffery, who is long-time member and held various official positions within the organizations, including as District Commander. She also works with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).

More expressions of hope and prayer continue on a “Lets help bring Elaine home” Facebook group formed this week by Shanna Monroe which now has more than 1,200 members.

Group members have volunteered to create and put up missing person posters throughout Prince Edward County and in Belleville.

Lynn Green posts a thank you to Printcraft and KA Media for their donation of poster printing.
“This is exactly what community spirit is all about,” she wrote. “When a call for help comes and a community makes themselves available. One of the many reasons I love ‘The County'”

And Gidget Pye offered a solemn reminder of small town life.

“With any tragic story comes rumours and gossip. Fact mixed with fiction. I hope people are mindful of what they speculate or repeat to others because at the centre of every story is a family of people that are hurting.”

Anyone with information about Elaine Jeffery or who may have seen a vehicle similar to the photograph is asked to call Prince Edward OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the news today. I knew Elaine through the CPS. She was such a warm and friendly person and had a passion for the CPS. I will miss her smile, energy and friendly manner.

I looked after Sarah and Rachel when they were small and when my mom fell into a coma the Jeffery’s family was my anchor and they kept me from falling apart. Elaine was at the hospital when my mom was brought in and was supportive and caring as always.. My heart goes out to the family and she will be missed forever

  3. Ginette Golden says:

Chris, I second that. Once I told Elaine I can’t wait for her being crowned commander in chief in a few years because she deserved it and her reply was “Wow”!

First I offered prayers for her speedy safe return (under Gigi) and now I offer prayers for her soul and for her family. She was just a kind, hard working, beautiful lady inside and outside.

  4. Capt Chris Holder says:

I knew Elaine through The Prince Edward Squadron and no person was more dedicated to the cause than her. The Canadian Power and Sail Squadron will have a very difficult if not impossible time replacing Elaine. My condolances to her family. Chris Holder Past Commander Prince Edward Squadron

My husband and I are in shock over the news of Elaine. I worked with her for 25 years at Picton Hospital and found her to be a generous and loving woman. She recently gave me a big hug at our Alzheimer golf tournament and I will remember that moment forever. She will be missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Janet Lyons

I truely agree with you shanna, she was a very active person and , yes she was always smiling and ready to help if you needed it for sure. her one daughter is a friend of my daughter as they have gone to school since public school. yes this county is full of gossip and too many people are quick to judge before the verdict is in with the truth of the matter. here is hoping that things will come to a postive ending but if not, the family has the help and support of the community to help in the days to come.

  11. brenda says:

Elaine is a wonderful person and would help anyone In need..just like Shanna. The closeness of the people from “the county” is definitely felt from anyone who lives outside of the area. With the love felt from there and the surrounding areas like Belleville and Trenton and beyond, we will all bring hope to such a beautiful person.

  12. Shanna Monroe says:

I started the FB group for Elaine because she is such a wonderful person..No matter where you may have met up with Elaine she would always have a smile on her face and be in for a conversation. I consider myself very fortunate as Elaine is my cousin…Her smile, her laugh, her personality was almost infectious…
We need to keep the outpouring of love and admiration coming for her….I would like to thank “the County” for stepping up when one of our own needs some assistance…It really is something to be proud of!!!
