Celebrate County’s Biodiversity

Biodiversity-DayThe United Nations has proclaimed May 22 the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. In 2016, the theme is: mainstreaming biodiversity; sustaining people and their livelihoods.

Biodiversity is the foundation for life and for the essential services provided by ecosystems. It therefore underpins peoples’ livelihoods and sustainable development in all areas of activity, including economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, among others. By halting biodiversity loss, we are investing in people, their lives and their well-being.

In Prince Edward County we are blessed with a valuable example of the importance of Biodiversity in the South shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. The area supports a growing agriculture industry, has traditionally supported great lakes fishery and is becoming an important tourism district.

To bring attention to these important biodiversity issues the Field Naturalists are inviting citizens to join them on an exploration of the South Shore.

The tour starts at the parking lot on West Mary St. at Elizabeth and continues to Point Petre. After stops at the Miller Family Nature Reserve and Ostrander Point Crown Land Block, the group will proceed to the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory for Bird Banding demonstrations and lunch.
Everyone is invited. Carpool from Picton’s Mary Street parking lot at 9 a.m. or be at Point Petre and Army Reserve roads at 9:30. Bring lunch and binoculars
