The Lehigh County Clippers U14 Boys wrapped up their 2017-2018 basketball season in St. Thomas at the Ontario Cup provincial tournament.

Coach Melanie Veenstra reports it was a tough start dropping the first three games versus London, Guelph and Goulbourn, but finishing on a high note with a 57-54 win over the Gladiators.

“One of the main goals of the coaches this season was perseverance: staying focused, mentally strong and committed when the going gets tough,” she said. “The team rose to the occasion in their final game and demonstrated their perseverance.”

They came out strong with a 23-8 lead in the first quarter, but that lead became a tie game with six minutes left in the game.

The Clippers dug deep and played hard to win the game by three points.

“The weekend was a team effort with many players contributing with scoring and playing strong defence,” said Veenstra. “Youth sport is about so much more than winning. It is a metaphor for living life. It is an opportunity for youth to learn about themselves, to develop personal character, to build friendships and work as a team, to stay active, to grow in confidence and to have fun. It is fair to say that this team has grown in all of these areas. ”
