Community helps OPP keep County kids warm this winter

The Prince Edward OPP’s Reema Abdo, John Hatch, Michelle LaMorre and Patrick Menard with more than 50 bags of new winter coats, boots, hats and mitts to keep children in the County warm this winter.

More than 50 children will be warmer this winter thanks to the community’s support of the ‘Keep Kids Warm’ campaign.

The program (formerly Adopt-a-Child) is run by the Prince Edward County OPP, Belleville Police, Central Hastings OPP and Stirling Rawdown Police Services and in conjunction with the local CAS Angel Campaign, the Storehouse Food Bank in Wellington and the Salvation Army.

Regionally, the campaign will help keep children from more than 1,100 families warm this winter.

Requests for assistance in Prince Edward County were lower this year, (94 last year) though organizers are unclear as to why. It was noted some of the other organizations also provide warm clothing in their own programs.

PEC OPP Detachment Commander, Staff Sgt. John Hatch was thrilled with the support of the community again this year.

He specifically noted Rick McVicar and girlfriend Mary McInnis who, for the second year, surprised the campaign with a donation of $169.95 – representing what the two Regent Theatre volunteers find in change dropped by patrons throughout the year.

Some members of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary craft group with the 376 hats and mitts donated to the OPP’s Keep Kids Warm project. PEC OPP Community Safety officer Patrick Menard gratefully received the donation.

Community Safety Officer Patrick Menard was also pleased to receive a fifth annual donation of 376 handmade hats and mittens created by the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Craft Group.

The two also offered sincere thanks to about a half dozen volunteers who make the campaign happen, and to the ROC Centre downtown Picton for assisting with registrations. More volunteers may be added next year to extend registration hours in multiple locations.

“When you think about it, 1,100 families in the Quinte area is significant,” said Hatch. “It’s all about support from the community. I love this community.”

Pick up for the coats is set for Nov. 5-7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the station.
