Community Keeps County Kids Warm

Helping with the set up at the PEC OPP detachment on Cty. Rd 1 to distribute new snowsuits, boots, hats and mittens to Keep Kids Warm are Cst. Kim Guthrie, Cst. Pat Menard, volunteer Barb Sills, Sobey’s owner Jamie Yeo and PEC OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. John Hatch.

The community has stepped-up to keep 94 Prince Edward County children warm this winter.

Donations of money and new winter clothing poured in this year toward the efforts of the Prince Edward County OPP and partners in the regional campaign to provide winter snowsuits, boots, warm mittens and hats for children of working families and those in need of assistance.

“I love this community,” said Cst. Kim Guthrie, of the PEC OPP. “As always, this community is fantastic when it comes to supporting children – everything from donations of purchased clothing dropped off here at the detachment, to support from the local restaurant Blumen, and other local businesses like Sobeys, and people who give privately to make sure the program is successful every year.”

Last month, members of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Craft Group presented 496 handmade items for the campaign – for the fourth year, using wool donated by patrons of their Second Time Around Shop in Picton.

Meanwhile, shoppers at Sobey’s handed over an extra $486 while paying for groceries to purchase paper mittens in support of the cause.

And Rick McVicar and his girlfriend Mary McInnis surprised the OPP’s new detachment commander while he was on foot patrol near Picton’s Regent Theatre.

“Rick called me over while I was on patrol to ask if he could donate all the dimes that have fallen out of people’s pockets at the Regent. He and his girlfriend volunteer there and I thought there might be $10 or so when he handed over the bag, but when it was counted, there was $91.10. I thought that was impressive, and very generous of them.”

“Every year we’re reminded of the generosity of our community,” said Guthrie. “Our community is fabulous and people go out of their way. One couple that goes south for the winter made sure they mailed us a cheque before they left. So wonderful.”

The warmth of the community support for the campaign has been ongoing for 30 years. This will be the last year the cause will be called ‘Adopt-a-Child’ as volunteers have found the name can leads to some confusion with other programs.

In 2018, ‘Keep Kids Warm’ will title the fundraiser.  The program is run by the Prince Edward County OPP, the Belleville Police, the Central Hastings OPP and Stirling Rawdon Police Services. Officers work in conjunction with the local CAS Angel Campaign, the Storehouse Food Bank in Wellington and the Salvation Army to help make sure no child in gets left out. Regionally, the campaign helps keep more than 1,000 children warm for the winter.

Long-time volunteer Barb Sills will be assisting with the distribution of the clothing this weekend at the detachment on County Road 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parents and guardians are reminded to bring the same identification they showed upon registration.
