County brings list of concerns to municipalities’ conference

Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson and members of council have a list of concerns to discuss with higher levels of government attending this week’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference.

The County delegation is among about 2,000 participants in Ottawa from August 18-21.

For more than a century, Ontario’s largest municipal conference has brought together municipal, provincial, and federal officials to work collectively to overcome municipal challenges and plan for the future.

Ontario’s Premier, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and the three party leaders are featured speakers and several additional provincial ministers will participate in the conference. Premier Ford is expected to address the conference Monday.

The annual conference is a chance for municipal officials to discuss and move forward on shared challenges, to learn and to create opportunities to benefit their communities. In addition to the conference program, municipal staff and officials will take part in delegation meetings with provincial and federal ministries.

Mayor Ferguson, councillors Andreas Bolik, Mike Harper, John Hirsch, Ernie Margetson, Janice Maynard, Phil St-Jean, and Acting CAO Robert McAuley are expected to meet with Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, to discuss planning system changes and the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program.

The County delegation will also meet with Andrea Khanjin, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks. In that meeting, Mayor Ferguson intends to discuss the environmental concerns at Picton Terminals and propose an admittance levy at Sandbanks Provincial Park to support local infrastructure renewal.

Key session topics include cyber security, cannabis legalization, local economies in transition, changes to the health care system, recycling and the rise of plastics, affordable housing, municipal policing, rural economic development, climate change, addressing social and health problems facing our communities and much more.

AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments.
