County Food Hub at Sophiasburgh gains extension from school board

The County Food Hub at Sophiasburgh project to save the school from closing has received an extension from the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board to have funding in place.

Following a presentation Monday by organizers Mike Farrell and Todd Foster, the HPEDSB approved a motion Monday to keep Sophiasburgh Central Public School open subject to conditions. The extension relates to a decision by the board in June last year to agree to keep the school open if it can become a community hub. Student population sustainability, to ensure program viability, will be part of ongoing contractual consideration.

Farrell noted confidence to raise just over $300,000 left of the $845,000 target by August 31. The project was facing an April 30th deadline.

If the funds are not in place, students from Sophiasburgh will be consolidated to Prince Edward Collegiate Institute in January 2019.

The plan transforms 5,400 square feet of the school’s west wing to provide a shared commercial kitchen as a key aspect of the business plan which also includes space and resources for food service training and learning opportunities for students from all the County schools, and region.

Mayor Robert Quaiff told council earlier this month he learned the project is expected to receive official approval to receive $90,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
