Two Prince Edward County men’s heroic actions during a house fire were formally recognized at Shire Hall Tuesday night.

Prince Edward County council recognized Brad Osbourne and Greg Yaworski, two Nash Home Hardware employees, for saving the life of a Hallowell man and his dog during a house fire in mid-August.

“This is a really terrific story that involves members of our community going way above the call of duty and it’s very appropriate tonight given that this is Fire Prevention Week,” Mayor Steve Ferguson said.

Osbourne and Yaworski were passing by a house that was clearly on fire on Gilead Road when they stopped and woke up the sleeping home-owner and got him and his dog out of the burning home safely, “thereby averting a catastrophe that could have been an awful lot worse.”

Yaworski attempted to put out the fire while Osbourne called 911.

Ferguson said 30 firefighters were called to the scene including councillor Phil Prinzen.

The fire resulted in $500,000 in damages but there were no injuries thanks to the quick thinking of the two men.

Fire Chief Scott Manlow attended last night’s council meeting to commemorate their actions.
He said he was honoured to see Greg and Brad recognized for their heroic actions.

“As chief, I greatly appreciate the efforts these two gentlemen did in assisting the resident escaping from his home. Their actions definitely contributed to the safety of the resident and his dog. Greg and Brad did this in a safe manner ensuring their safety as well as the a resident.”

Councillor Phil St. Jean nominated Brad Osbourne and Greg Yaworski for certificates of recognition, saying he truly felt they went “above and beyond.”

“I met Greg and Brad at a job site in Wellington on the Lake. It was after the fire and they struck me – they are such nice people. I think that’s the best way I can put it. When I had previously had read the story about what happened and their actions, I felt ‘This is exemplifies what it is to a County resident.’ You put yourself at risk sometimes to help others,” St. Jean said. “To me, there is no greater award that we, as a Council, can give than the Civic Recognition Award. I truly felt that they were two outstanding people who went above and beyond and they more than deserve this award.”

Mayor Ferguson said Osbourne and Yaworski’s names will be engraved on the Civic Recognition Awards plaque outside the CAO’s office in the foyer at Shire Hall, which celebrates the extraordinary achievements and contributions of other community members.

Council and the public gallery gave the men a standing ovation while press members took photos.
