County to receive $118,000 in provincial gas tax funding

Prince Edward County is to receive $118,007 from Ontario’s gas tax program – higher than last year’s allocation of $97,980.

The Ontario government is paying out $364 million to 107 municipalities across the province to expand or improve their public transit systems.

Among neighbouring municipalities, Belleville receives $737,657;
Deseronto (Greater Napanee, Hasting County, Tyendinaga) receives $193,762
and Quinte West (Brighton) gains $506,885.

Funding for Ontario’s gas tax program is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province.

The program provides municipalities with two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenues. Municipalities receiving gas tax funding must use these funds toward their public transit capital or operating expenditures, at their own discretion, including upgrading transit infrastructure, increasing accessibility, purchasing transit vehicles, adding more routes and extending hours of service.

The share that each municipality receives under Ontario’s gas tax program is based on a formula of 70 per cent ridership and 30 per cent population.

Municipalities that contribute financially to public transit services are eligible for funding.

    Sounds like no extra $$ will be flowing in from pot shops but at least we have some gas dollars to help out with infrastructure – or maybe not. I wonder if the county will use the gas funding program $$ to fix the residential streets and sewers – or whether it will be spent in areas most travelled by tourists. I’m tired of my street falling apart. I’m tired of phoning the county to come and tell me over and over again that my sewers are broken and damaged – and won’t get repaired for a couple of years. Where exactly is this money going to be spent and can the citizens have a say? If the community and council invite tourism, should there not also be a responsibility to ensure the citizens aren’always flipping the bill for repairs and services such as roads, ambulance, police, fire, etc.
