Canada’s 150th birthday was celebrated in a wash of red and white throughout Prince Edward County. The largest crowd Wellington has seen in many years lined both sides of the Main Street as far as the eye could see for a Canada Day parade. Though the rain held off, organizers moved the children’s activities, food and usual park participants to the arena – just in case. In Picton, Main Street was packed with activities for families – including the temporary sodded play area from Come Alive Outside and giant bouncy castles in Benson Park.
Years of determination, support from the community and many sponsors came to fruition as a bulldozer roared into life and the new splash pad at the Picton Fairgrounds was under way. Supporters surrounded co-chairpersons Susan Quaiff and Phil St. Jean at the site to formally mark the occasion with a photograph. The Kinsmen also presented the $10,000 the club promised to deliver as soon as the shovel was in the ground.
Sandbanks Provincial Park was awarded the international ‘Blue Flag’ designating it as a world-class beach – just the second provincial park in Ontario to be recognized. The Blue Flag was hoisted across from the Sandbanks park canteen by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Kathryn McGarry, Enivonmental Defence Program manager Brett Tryon, Sandbanks Park Superintendent Robin Reilly and Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff. Parks staff joined in for the photograph to mark the occasion.
It was the perfect day for a picnic to celebrate Prince Edward County’s 225th birthday, Sunday, July 16. Community members gathered around the historic Crystal Palace at Picton Fairgrounds to enjoy picnic lunches and entertainment while they awaited the unveiling of a commemorative barn quilt – marking both the County’s 225th birthday and Canada’s 150th year.
The Ontario Municipal Board heard closing remarks in the hearing over Prince Edward County’s electoral ward boundaries. OMB chair Mary Anne Sills noted the board will be reserving decision until a thorough review of all documentation and statements has been conducted. The session at Shire Hall focused on statements by experts for each side, telling how the County’s electoral wards do, and do not, meet criteria to give citizens effective representation.
A full house of spectators hooted and hollered as the second annual County Championship Rodeo charged onto the Picton Fairgrounds. The Prince Edward Agricultural Society and the municipality brought the Rawhide Rodeo back to town for the second annual event. Last year, the inaugural event attracted more than 1,700 spectators from across the region. – Darlene Shantz photo
The Queen’s University Barefoot Players presented adaptations of French Canadian Folk Tales in the Toques & Tales show at the Picton Branch Public Library. The players took their audience on a storytelling portage with flying canoes, heaps of poutine, singing about Big Joe Mufferaw, a folk hero from the Ottawa Valley, and dancing to the tune of “Ah! Si Mon Moine Voulait Danser”. The cast includes, Lizzie, Blair, Sarah, Julia, Evan and Maddy – members of Queen’s School of Drama and Music’s theatre troup for young audiences.
The third annual ‘Teeing Up Fore Health Care Golf Classic scored a hole-in-one for Prince Edward County’s hospital emergency department by raising $27,500. This year’s achievement brings the three-year total raised through RE/MAX’s efforts to just over $80,500 – bringing the mercury on the thermometer outside the Lake Street office to $197,500. RE/MAX has committed to raising $250,000 for medical equipment needs at the County hospital. More than 100 cyclists breezed through Prince Edward County on day two of a six-day journey from Toronto to Montreal. The 19th annual Friends for Life Bike Rally has raised approximately $803,000 for Toronto People With AIDS (PWA) Foundation – each cyclist raising a minimum of $2,500 to participate.
