Firefighters save historic building in Picton from extensive damage

fire-July-16-Century-21-1The historic Century 21 building in Picton was saved from extensive damage this morning thanks to quick action by Prince Edward County firefighters.

fire-Century-21-july-16-3A small fire in the back of the building was called in at about 10 a.m. and a plume of thick smoke could be seen from a few blocks away.

PEC OPP diverted traffic at both ends of the scene.

Mayor Robert Quaiff was downtown Picton at the time and saw the department’s new aerial truck head to the scene.

“It was satisfying to see the new aerial truck coming in from down the street,” he said. “I was so impressed watching our firefighters in action. They work like a well-oiled machine.”

Mayor Quaiff said it’s due to the County firefighters’ quick action that damage to the building was minimal.
