Food Hub project town hall meeting moved to Wednesday

Tonight’s town hall meeting updating progress of the Sophiasburgh Food Hub project has been cancelled due to today’s freezing rain forecast.

The meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Sophiasburgh Town Hall.

The committee, earlier this month, updated the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board on its efforts to renew Sophiasburgh Central. The K-Grade 8 school was to be closed following last year’s accommodation review process. Since, the Sophiasburgh Food Hub committee has been investigating lease arrangements with food-based businesses to better utilize the excess space at the school. The plan includes using part of the school to serve the community with commercial kitchen facilities and food handling and preparation. The group needs to have contracts in place by May.

Speakers at Wednesday’s meeting include MP Neil Ellis, County mayor Robert Quaiff, councillors Kevin Gale and Bill Roberts and the steering committee co-chairs Todd Foster and Mike Farrell.

A question period is scheduled to follow.
