Hospital appeal campaign focuses on imaging tools to diagnose and treat patients

If a picture is worth a thousand words, an image to help doctors diagnose and treat disease is priceless.

Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation is raising money this year to pay for new scopes and an image archiving system for the endoscopy centre. The emergency department’s heart monitoring system needs an upgrade to accommodate more patients, and the foundation still has to pay for the MRI refurbishment.

Diagnostic imaging has improved in leaps and bounds over the decades. Modern colonoscopes or gastroscopes are more detailed than ever. Storing, accessing and zooming in on those pictures to provide a diagnosis has become so much easier.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines produce pictures with extremely fine detail, opening a window deep within the human body. Yet these devices come at a price – a short life-span and high cost. And paying for medical equipment falls to the community. This is why PECM Hospital Foundation is hard at workfor the patients of Prince Edward County.

Work also continues with community partners to bring a new hospital to the County. The current estimate for the community share is over $12 million, although we won’t know the actual goal until the project goes to tender.

Fundraising is ongoing for the $1 million MRI refurbishment. The images from the new device are crisp, clear and detailed. Just over $60,000 to go before reaching this goal, and the need to keep your local hospital equipped with the best medical devices available never stops. More than $60,000 remains to be raised for the Picture of Health Campaign as well.
• The Telemetry upgrade is still $14,000 short of goal. This vital heart monitoring equipment needs to be upgraded in PECM Hospital’s emergency department to accommodate
more patients.
• PECM Hospital’s regional endoscopy centre needs more scopes and an image archiving system which stores photos taken during procedures. Surgeons can then review the pictures to confirm diagnosis.

Prince Edward County residents have been wonderfully supportive of the Hospital Foundation over the past 30 years. Continue the tradition by donating to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation this holiday season.
Your gift means we can keep your hospital strong and at the cutting edge, for you, your loved ones and for every person in our community, now and for many years to come.
Our work continues, but our hospital’s future is bright…and together we will leave a lasting impact on people’s lives.

Watch for the Foundation’s appeal letter in your mailbox to support health care in the County.
