Kingston hospitals seek continued support from the County

County council will learn the importance of supporting services at Kingston’s hospitals that were visited 13,029 times in 2015 by residents of Prince Edward County.

Shannon Coull, Director Leadership Philanthropy, University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, will pitch a support request of $61,797 per year, based on a fair share calculation from PEC statistics.

The County’s pledge of $502,185 from 2008-2017 helped generate $634 million in funding toward the Cancer Centre, a new inpatient floor, pediatric unit, kidney dialysis unit, critical care unit, acute inpatient mental health, outpatient clinics and Providence Care Hospital.

Coming plans include $570 million in site construction at Kingston General and $20 million at Hotel Dieu.

“Participation of municipalities is crucial,” her report states. “Together with commitments to research and education, the local share needed for the next round of construction and investments in programs will be $145 million and yield a provincial investment of over $500 million.”

Coull’s deputation notes an increase in visits to Kingston hospitals by PEC residents of 157 per cent in 2016 – including 785 surgeries, 316 emergency visits, 10 babies born, 10 newborns from PEC who needed specialized care.

While the County hospital’s role is vital for primary care, residents who travel to Kingston are generally seeking highly specialized and critical care. KGH is also home of the cancer centre, as well as the academic hospital for Queen’s University.
