New medical officer of health

Dr. Piotr “Peter” Oglaza

Following completion of his public health residency at Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health, will become the new medical officer of health.

He succeeds Dr. Richard Schabas who retired last year in December.

“I am excited to continue work with the team at Hastings Prince Edward Public Health and with our community partners to improve the health of our communities in my new role as the Medical Officer of Health” said Dr. Oglaza.

Oglaza, 41, received his medical training at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, and also holds a Master of Public Health from Queen’s University, a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Occupational and Public Health from Ryerson University, and specialist qualifications as a graduate of the Queen’s University Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program.

His experience is diverse and extensive, including several years as a rural Family Physician in Southeastern Ontario, as well as several years as a Public Health Inspector in the same region.

Oglaza has been serving as Medical Resident at HPEPH since the end of 2016.

In the coming months, he will work with the board and staff to finalize and implement the next strategic plan – establishing a strategic approach to addressing the modernized Public Health Standards for Programs and Services recently issued by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, while ensuring that community needs continue to be addressed within the framework of constrained fiscal resources.

“The Board is delighted to have engaged Dr. Oglaza, an experienced Public Health specialist, to lead the work of Hastings Prince Edward Public Health,” said Maureen Piercy, Board of Health Chair. “We have had the opportunity to see Dr. Oglaza work with staff and board as our medical resident. It has been evident that he has not only the professional skills and experience required in this challenging role, but great passion and a strong vision focused on improving the quality of health, and health equity for citizens of our region.”

Chair Piercy also recognized Dr. Ian Gemmill, who has been providing leadership and mentorship to the Board of Health, Dr. Oglaza and staff as acting Medical Officer of Health for the past year.
