OPP investigate seven holiday weekend collisions

Prince Edward Ontario Provincial Police investigated seven different collisions within the County over the Labour Day Weekend in which three resulted in charges being laid and one collision resulted in serious injuries.

On Saturday, Aug. 30 at about 2:15 p.m. a collision at Bridge and Head streets in Picton, OPP officers and Hastings EMS responded to a two-vehicle collision where involved persons were treated and release by EMS.

A 30-year-old woman from Belleville was charged with Careless Driving and Driving while Under Suspension. She was issued a summons to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice -Provincial Offence Court on Oct, 4.

On Sunday, Sept. 1, officers responded to three collisions.

At about 2:30 p.m. officers were on scene of a three vehicle collision on Highway 62 and County Road 1 in Hallowell. Prince Edward County Fire Department and Hastings EMS also attended for assistance.

Police report a westbound vehicle on County Road 1 struck a southbound vehicle on Highway 62, then veered into a third vehicle stopped facing eastbound on County Road 1, after striking the southbound vehicle.

A 29-year-old from Vaughn has been charged with Fail to Yield to Traffic on through Highway.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., a collision on Picton Main Street near Fawcett Avenue resulted in an SUV colliding with a pick-up truck towing a boat. The SUV was located on County Road 49.

A 63-year-old from Ottawa has been charged with Careless Driving and Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence. A 33-year-old from Ottawa was also charged with Obstruct Officer and Permit Unlicensed Person to Drive Motor Vehicle.

Just before 9 p.m. the County Fire Department and Hastings EMS also attended to assist OPP officers at a weather-related single vehicle accident on Loyalist Parkway, south of Smokes Point Road in Ameliasburgh.

A 60-year-old male driver travelling southbound lost control of his pick-up truck, and struck a hydro pole. He was transported to hospital with non-life threatening, but serious injuries. The highway was closed for a short period while Hydro One replaced the severed pole.

Also on Sunday Sept. 1, 2019 at approximately 8:50 p.m. an officer observed a vehicle travelling westbound on Loyalist Parkway, west of Lake Street in Picton without any running headlights, in an erratic manner after being observed.

A roadside screening device was administered and the driver was transported to the detachment for further testing.

A 33-year-old of Toronto resident was arrested and charged with Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drug – 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code
Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus) – 320.14(1)(b) Criminal Code
Novice Driver – B.A.C. above zero – 44.1(3) Highway Traffic Act.

His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on Oct. 2.

    Historically there have been a number of serious accidents and fatalities at this intersection. Bad drivers are at the root of the problem, not the intersection itself. It is clearly marked and there is good visibility in all directions. Put the money towards more policing, not a round-about.

    Aggressive driving, speeding and poor sight lines are merging into the top concern for PEC.

    How about obeying stop and yield and save the million dollars for hungry children.

    A roundabout at Hwys 1 and 62 is looking more and more attractive, isn’t it? Who’s talking to the Ministry of Transportation about this?
