Despite a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to Bayside Red Devils at the Bay of Quinte “Frozen Four” tournament in Trenton, the Panthers girls hockey team is moving on to COSSA level hockey for the fourth year in a row.

The team was strong and showed growth at the Bay of Quinte tournament, under head coach Laurie Spencer.

After a disappointing but expected loss, 6-0, to the top seed and eventual gold medal winning Moira Trojans, the Panthers took it on the chin 55 seconds into the OT in the consolation round game against the Devils.

Sidney Davies had put the Panthers up 3-2 with an amazing break-away shot that Red Devil’s goalie had no chance on. Brooke Jackson and Maddy Young had combined on the play to set Davies free where she crushed the puck off the back of the net top cross bar. The clang of the puck meeting metal could have been heard in Picton.

Kendra Marion had two goals while Maddy Young assisted on all three Panther goals. Davies assisted on the second Marion goal.

Goalie Maddy Rowbotham’s play was great and steady during the tournament, giving the Panthers lots to be proud of, and the opportunity to win the consolation game.

Panthers will be in action Monday at COSSA at 10am vs St. Peter’s at the Kinsmen Arena in Peterborough. Lose and they’ll be finished. Win, and the next game will be at 2 p.m.
