PECI’s Panther Girls Hockey players are OFSAA Consolation Champions, defeating the Jean Vanier Storm (Collingwood) 4-2 in the championship game today.

The Panther trio of Cailey Jones, Sam Ward and Brooke Jackson were on fire again and dominated the Storm in the offensive end. Cailey scored two goals, Brooke Jackson scored the other and Sam Ward assisted on all three goals while Brooke and Cailey alternated on assisting and scoring. Amazing team work as they cycled down low in the Storm end looking for the right opportunity to strike. The team was up 4-0 at one point in the game. Amber Miller added the other single tally, unassisted, in an end-to-end rush.

The team thanks all those who made the Panther dream run at OFSAA a reality, for their contributions and support. If you wish to contribute to the Panther effort, drop it off at the PECI school with the designation Girls OFSAA Championship Tournament.

By Mike Pothier
PECI’s Panther Girls Hockey team won a drama-filled game last evening and are in the consolation finals in OFSAA against Jean Vanier Storm (Collingwood) Thursday morning. The puck drops at 10a.m. EST.

The semi’s action was intense against the General Amherst Bull Dogs (near Windsor). Cailey Jones sealed the deal for the final entry with Brooke Jackson’s help in a penalty-filled overtime eventually winning it 3-2.

The Panthers took a bench minor just into OT to make the play and then the Bull Dogs took a penalty to even the play up with 3 on 3 hockey. Cailey scored shortly after the even play started. Amber Miller and Sam Ward had the other goals while Alex Staley, and Abby Terpstra added assists.

Panthers eliminated the St. Mark Lions (Manotick) 4-2 in quarter final play earlier in the day. Again, the top line was working well combining on 9 points. Brooke Jackson lead the play with 2 goals and 1 assist. Sam Ward and Cailey Jones had 1 goal and 2 assists each.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Panthers ended up short Tuesday night in OFSSA girl’s hockey action after round robin play. Goals differential in previous played round robin games was the only thing standing between them and the medal rounds.

Going into last night’s game, Panthers were tied with Beaver Brea Broncos in points in Pool A play, and after losing to the St. Michael’s Warriors 7-0 in the morning, and the Panther’s needed a win against the Broncos to secure their place in the medal round.

At the end of play, the game was tied 4-4, and after a lengthy discussion in the tournament convener’s office, the Broncos were declared the final entry into the medal rounds from Pool A.

The top Panther’s line of Brooke Jackson, Cailey Jones and Sam Ward had a fantastic night combining on 8 points. Brooke had two goals and an assist, Cailey had a goal and two assists, while Sam had a single goal and assist. Alex Staley had the other helper.

PECI’s Panthers were victorious in their opener at the All Ontario Championship (OFSAA) Monday in Kenora.

The Panthers downed the Almaguin Highlands Secondary School Highlanders 1-0. Panther forward Sam Ward scored the single tally with the assist coming from team captain Cailey Jones. Taylor Snider recorded the shut out in Panther goal.

Panthers are in action against the #1 seed and power house St. Michael Catholic Secondary School Warriors at 10am CST (11am EST) Tuesday which could well be a preview for the gold medal game as the top two seeds of Pool A go onto the medal rounds on Wednesday.

Looking ahead, even with a loss to St. Michael’s in the morning, and a win against the Beaver Brea Broncos later in the day,  the Panther’s could still have a berth in the medal round as the second seed in Pool A.
