Police officer butts out potential fire

A Prince Edward OPP officer on routine patrol of Main Street Picton butt out a potential fire Tuesday, after noticing smoke rising from the base of a tree.

The officer stomped out the smoldering mulch at the base of the tree that had started to burn after a cigarette butt was carelessly discarded into it.

Police are asking smokers to be especially vigilant during the hot, dry weather with their cigarette butts. Throwing cigarette butts out of car windows can also be problematic and easily start a forest or grass fire.

All of Prince Edward County is on a “partial Burn Ban” which restricts burning to a container with a screened top or a small campfire.
