Premier Doug Ford is expected to announce the return of buck a beer Tuesday at Barley Days Brewery in Prince Edward County.
He is to be joined by Finance Minister Vic Fedeli and local MPP and Government House Leader Todd Smith.
The minimum price of a bottle or can of beer is to be lowered to $1 from $1.25. However, brewers are not required to charge less, and the lower minimum price is expected to exclude draft beer and excludes the bottle deposit.
The conservatives campaigned that bringing back buck a beer would allow more competition in the beer market “without affecting the province’s revenues” from beer and wine taxes – approximately $589 million in 2016-17 as stated in government documents.
Ontario’s previous buck a beer was changed by the Liberal government in 2008 as part of its social responsibility mandate.
Ford also campaigned on broadening the sale of beer and wine to corner stores and box stores.
In a Twitter video released on Interntional Beer Day, Friday, he said “We have 260 of the greatest brewers anywhere in the world,” Ford said on his Twitter video. “My friends we’re going to do our part because a buck a beer is coming to a shelf near you.”

Those elected officials, [who must remain nameless for the sake of politeness] who snub their constituents on important community issues like property rights and public safety, and disrespect us by refusing to discuss these high priority issues, deserve the same treatment. Everyone suffers under bad governance, and its time for ethical changes in this County.

There are those large US beer plants in Milwaukee that could benefit from selling beer at a buck.
Hardly the appropriate place for Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal candidate to be showing up. He doesn’t represent the change Ontario electorate put in place. Good call.

I just found out that neither the Mayor, our CEO nor any Council member were invited to this event. It doesn’t matter what political association any of them have – that is ill-mannered. Protocol demands that local officials to be invited – this is an overt snub by Queen’s Park.
If anyone believes that PEC is going to be better off under a Ford government – well this is not a good start.

Oh, come on people you have got to know that the days of a buck a beer are long gone. A brewery spokesman was interviewed on last night’s news – no brewery can afford to make it so cheaply. This is just a Ford hype over nothing. He is only lowering the amount that a brewery “could’ sell it for – none are.
BTW – what time is Ford suppose to make this announcement?
In Quebec you can buy a 24 for 20 bucks at a grocery store. It is what is called a lost leader.
Mr, Ford is setting the stage for this. First he will lower the cost per beer law then allow grocery stores to sell beer. Then the stores to create sales will offer 24s for 24 bucks as a loss leader. You would never see the monopoly BEER STORE have lost leaders.
I think back to when the Liberals were first elected, a promise of no tax hikes was part of their campaign, 3 months after being elected a tax increase. That was just one of the many lies that got them nick named fiberals. At least now a premier so far is sticking to his promises
Ironically, they’ll bask in the publicity, but I doubt Barley Days Brewery can afford or would want to produce a beer that can retail for $1.00. That will be left to the likes of Anheuser-Busch InBev, Sapporo or Molson Coors. Perhaps even they won’t want to be bothered.
Ford should have said: “My friends we’re going to do our part because a buck a beer is coming to a shelf near you … [perhaps … we hope].”
Picton and Barley Days Brewery are getting a lot of air time on City TV’s Breakfast Television this morning.
At taxpayers cost. No, they are implementing new market opportunities at their own expense. This announcement if nothing else is great advertising for the County craft beer industry.
I was curious what Minimum Pricing for Alcochol was its also known as Social Reference Pricing. This is a small sample of info I found….

“In 2015, the National Alcohol Strategy Advisory Committee (NASAC) released a report, Social Reference Prices for Alcohol: A Tool for Canadian Governments to Promote a Culture of Moderation, which provides a comprehensive set of recommendations for social reference pricing (SRP) for alcohol sold from off-premise retail outlets (i.e., liquor stores).”
“Why implement SRP? SRP is a targeted policy that helps to prevent the availability of inexpensive sources of alcohol that are typically consumed by high-risk drinkers.”

BTW – I hope that the taxpayers are not paying for the The Three Amigos travel expenses to come here to make a non-announcement at a non-event.
The only promise Ford has made is to “allow” breweries to sell beer for a buck – but none of the breweries can afford to it. Currently the lowest price a brewery can sell beer for is $1.25 – when was the last time anyone paid that for a brew?

Beer is a very healthy beverage. I would love buck a beer, and Doug is keeping his promise.
