Public Health seeks more restrictions for vaping

The Hastings Prince Edward Public Health Board is seeking strong regulations on vaping products.

At its meeting Wednesday, the board stated it will be asking the Ministry of Health to amend regulations under the Smoke Free Ontario Act to prohibit the promotion of vaping products, and will work to determine what municipalities can do to restrict promotion of, and access to, vaping products in communities.

Dr. Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health and CEO for HPEPH discussed health concerns related to vaping, stating that “recent events have challenged the common misconception that vaping is harmless… while vaping is being promoted as less harmful than smoking, less harmful does not equal safe”.

Recently, vaping-related lung illnesses have emerged, with at least one case being identified in Ontario. The Minister of Health recently required that hospitals share data related to cases of vaping-related illness.

Dr. Oglaza said with this data, Public Health can better understand how and why vaping products may affect the lungs and determine how to best prevent these avoidable illnesses.

“While we are waiting for more information, we continue to share the message that if you don’t smoke or vape, don’t start.” he said.
