The provincial government is repealing the Ontario College of Trades in a bid to pave the way to “Making Ontario Open for Business” by lowering apprenticeship ratios. Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith said the act will, if passed by Ontario’s Legislature, cut regulations and open up skilled trades jobs by reducing journeyperson-to-apprentices ratios by winding down bureaucracy at the College of Trades. Contractors and builders in smaller communities have stated projects or operators are often too small to meet required ratios, therefore are denied an apprenticeship position. The new ratios will be one apprentice allowed for every journeyman as opposed to the 3:1 ratio currently in place.

Premier Doug Ford and Ontario government members at 8 Wing CFB Trenton announced the launch of consultations and services to assist and support military families. “During this week of Remembrance, we should never, ever forget families and the loved ones who stand behind the members of our military,” said Ford. “The upheaval of moving weighs heavy on their shoulders when they have to go from city to city right across the country. You can just imagine the stress they feel. Each and every one of us knows the stress to move a house; imagine doing that many times. Military families on average move three times more often than most families – uprooting their supporters so that they can fulfill their duty to the military and to Canada.” Above, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and MPP for Bay of Quinte Todd Smith, Minister Laurie Scott, with Premier Doug Ford, MPP Lindsey Park, and Bill Walker, Minister of Government and Consumer Services.

Becoming lost isn’t just distressing; it can be dangerous. The Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward (ASHPE) is working in partnership with local OPP and municipal police detachments to offer Project Lifesaver. It combines radio technology with trained police services to save time and most importantly, bring a loved one home safe. A wrist-transmitter worn by the participant emits a radio tracking signal that is picked up by a radio receiver. It works within a two-kilometre radius and in heavily wooded areas where GPS signals don’t exist.
