100 People Who Care PEC support Wellington Auxiliary Rescue

100 People who Care PEC members Mark Davis and David Fox flank Doug Monk, treasurer of the Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association, recipient of $12,000 from the organization’s sixth quarterly donation.

The 100 People Who Care Prince Edward County organization has sent its quarterly nod to those who help save lives.

Doug Monk, treasurer with The Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association, received $12,000 Wednesday from two founders of 100 People Who Care PEC, Mark Davis and David Fox.

The funds will go toward continued renovations of an old dive boat to put it into service as a rescue boat.

The funds, Monk said, would go a long way toward completing the boat’s electronics upgrades including radios, GPS, chart plotter and radar.

The auxiliary became operational in 2008 with a handful of volunteers and a 24-foot boat donated by the Prince Edward OPP. Today, its volunteers provide search and rescue services under the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at 8 Wing Trenton to cover the waters of Lake Ontario from Scotch Bonnet to Prince Edward Point.

The rescue association was nominated by John McRae, head of the auxiliary unit.

“It feels awesome. That’s the bottom line,” said Davis. “It’s these sort of gifts that make our community grow in all the right ways.”

Davis adds that And we always take every opportunity to thank Chris and Norah Rogers who donate the meeting area at The Waring House. “It’s a real bonus to have them on our side.”

“There is no executive or committees”, Fox adds. “The cheques are handed to us, and we hand them over. We don’t have any expenses and that’s why Mark and I and others joined the organization. There’s no chair, no minutes; the meeting is done in 30 minutes and we’ve done something good for the community without selling doughnuts at the door or standing on street corners.”

The 100 People Who Care group is based on the simple concept of bringing together members who commit to contribute $100 at each of four meetings annually, to make an enormous impact on a local charity. Past recipients include Reaching for Rainbows, Prince Edward Learning Centre, the Picton United Church Food Bank, Alternatives for Women and Glenwood Cemetery.

Davis said membership continues to grow and now stands at about 135 people.
