Reaching for Rainbows Executive Director Beth Lafay, left, receiving the 100+ Women Who Care Quinte donation this week from leadership committee member Tawnya Smith.
The 100+ Women Who Care Quinte charity showed its support for the empowering Reaching For Rainbows program in Picton as a recipient of its quarterly giving program.
The $6,500 contribution “means everything,” said Beth Lafay, Reaching for Rainbows Executive Director. “The program is so small, so grass roots.
“As a woman who grew up in Prince Edward County and struggled a lot, I never thought anybody cared about young girls in Prince Edward County and the girls at, the women at 100+ Women Who Care Quinte really showed how much we care about the girls in Prince Edward County.”
Reaching for Rainbows is a no-cost after-school program held at The Andrew in Picton, that takes a play-based approach with girls to foster friendships, a feeling of belonging and a greater sense of self. It is expanding its program for girls aged 6 to 9, to welcome girls up to 12 years of age.
100+ Women Who Care Quinte is dedicated to supporting non-profit and charitable organizations in the Quinte area. Meetings are held four times a year. Members can be individuals or in teams of four and together donate $100 each meeting.
Meetings are held at the Grand on Harder Drive in Belleville from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. At each meeting, three charities are drawn from member nominations to present to the group. The group then votes for the quarter’s chosen charity. The next meeting is set for Wednesday, June 11. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Come be a guest at the next meeting and see the magic. In September, the group plans to celebrate 10 years of making a difference in the community. Since 2015, 100+ Women Who Care Quinte has donated $350,525 to 34 local charities.
