20-second chit-chat comes to County – October 4

PechaKucha-logoPechaKucha Night unfolds in Bloomfield next Saturday as presenters of the Japanese ‘chit-chat’ show 20 slides for 20 seconds each (6 minutes and 40 seconds in total).

The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced, powers multiple-speaker events called PechaKucha Nights (PKNs). PechaKucha Night was devised in 2003 by architects at Klein-Dytham Architecture, Tokyo. In 2004, a few cities in Europe began holding PKNs, and soon the concept caught on globally; PechaKucha Nights are now held in more than 700 cities worldwide.

“PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, thoughts, holiday snaps — just about anything, really — in the PechaKucha 20×20 format,” said organizer Paul Andrews.

He was inspired to bring the event to the County after seeing a highly successful PechaKucha series in Maine.

“I wanted to start PK here in order to raise awareness of how much interesting stuff is going on that no one hears about,” Andrews said. “This should be about learning that the person you don’t know next door is actually up to some pretty nifty stuff, and hopefully some folks will reach out and make connections as a result.”

Presenters for the inaugural October 4th event are: Lori Farrington, Stacey Hubbs, Kyle Lane, Kristy Mills, Troy Morrissey, Lindsay Reid, Tamara Segal, Tim Snyder and Mihal Zada. Each will speak on a topic of their choice, creating a fast-paced and highly engaging evening. PKN’s will occur in the County every three months, providing a community platform for people to share their passions.

Meet Saturday Oct. 4, 2014, 7:30p.m. at the Bloomfield Town Hall, 289 Main Street. This is a free of charge event presented in partnership with the County of Prince Edward Public Library, although donations will be accepted and refreshments are to be available for sale.
