Consecon Day focus on community

Consecon celebrated its community Saturday and preserved a memory of the day for the future.
International portrait photographer Gabi von Gans assembled residents and visitors to the village’s Consecon Community Day celebration in the United Church parking lot. Perched above the group in a bucket truck, the photographer organized the grouping from on high into one big family to shoot “Consecon – Portrait of a Town” one of a series of six communities around Ontario to commemorate Canada 150.
Consecon Community Day kicked off with a car boot sale in the Emm’s Restaurant parking lot and the bargain hunting continued at area-wide garage and yard sales.
Bill and Laura Kemp hosted their annual all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with half the proceeds donated to the Consecon Masonic Lodge. The Kids Korner featuredg free games with prizes for the young ones, hosted by  Wellington’s Storehouse Foodbank.
A Prince Edward County fire truck and OPP car were on display for visitors to inspect, along with a recreational vehicle display.
Art demonstrations featuring visiting artists and “Art on the Lawn” were held at the Janet B Gallery and Studio, and at the Merchants Mill who were also hosting musical entertainment by Dulcet Crones.

The Consecon Library held its annual used book sale and hosted a kid’ craft area where children could play giant dominos, paint with potatoes  and help finish the Canada 150 Puzzle.
Just before noon, Consecon’s newest restaurant, The Mill,  held a soft opening where proprietor Sebastien Schawb hosted a meet and greet and taste. The Loonie Bin held an outdoor barbecue and vendor sale, and Strato’s Pizzeria and Restaurant featured Consecon Day specials throughout the day.
Another highlight of the day was the seventh annual Consecon Soap Box Derby, where, as the 12pm race time neared, some 67 entrants were prepared to roll off the starting ramp.
As in past years, racers from Quebec, Mississauga, Pickering and Toronto joined Prince Edward County racers for the event.
Emily MacDonald made the trip in from Kingston, and for the fifth year running, Max Burris, from Calgary, was back in the County to master the hill while here to visit grandmother Peggy Burris. Hillier Ward Councillor Steve Graham brought together a great team of volunteers for the event.
The day’s winning racers in the age seven to 11 years category were Charlie Smith, Lilee Reimerand Nora Genereaux.
Madison Colton won the day for the age 12 to 16 category, while Colton Knock took the open age event with Emily MacDonald and Tyler McEvoy.
Jayden Hunter drove the fastest car, clocked at 37kph
Once the medal and trophy presentations had been made and the top end of Mill Street was re-opened to traffic, folks made their way to the Consecon Legion for a pig roast dinner. The meal also served as the lead-in for the day capping street dance when once again Mill Street was closed off to traffic, this time in front of the Legion and the Masonic Hall. The Bonnie Roxx Band entertained and served up classic rock and pop dance tunes, keeping the crowd dancing till just after 11 pm.
