PEC Master Gardeners invited children ages eight to 12 to tend gardens this summer and keep a journal of their progress. Saturday, at the Picton branch library, participants were honoured for their work and presented certificates by Joyce Young, the club’s most senior member, at age 90.

“The three top award winners grew mostly vegetables and some herbs while other participants created a beautiful perennial garden of flowers,” said Ren Duinker, the Master Gardeners’ executive co-ordinator.

Kaden Koutroulides, of Consecon won top prize

Master Gardeners visited the childrens’ gardens twice throughout the season, once in July and again in September.

“The children had to keep a journal of what they planted, when their seeds sprouted, any bugs they found or anything in their garden that interested them.”

Winning the 2018 Children’s Garden Awards were Kaden Koutroulides, in first place for his vegetable garden; Evan Graham in second and Malinda de Villiers, third.

Master Gardeners are available to the community throughout the year to talk about gardening and answer gardening questions.
