Support for seniors includes pick ups, deliveries, food, phone calls

Grocery and Pharmacy pick up & delivery program
Free delivery of groceries, medicines and other essentials is available from Prince Edward Community Care. Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health recommended that individuals over 70 years of age self-isolate and seek services over the phone or internet. With that in mind, and with support from the United Way Hastings & Prince Edward, the agency established a free delivery program. Help to place an online/email grocery order

Hot Meals on Wheels available anywhere in Prince Edward County
Delivery to the door of a hot nutritious noon-time meal is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Receiving a hot meal at their door means seniors have regular contact with a volunteer to help them stay safe and well in their own home. Delivery to the door of nutritious frozen meals for seniors
Delivery of frozen meals can make it easier on those days when meal preparation is a monumental task – just pop a low sodium, high quality and tasty meal into the microwave and enjoy. Prince Edward Community Care offers both hot and frozen meals to seniors 60+ who live anywhere in Prince Edward County. Telephone Reassurance Program
Prince Edward Community Care has supportive volunteers that can offer companionship, encouragement and warm friendly conversation to seniors to help keep people safe. Rural Route Reassurance Program
This free program is available through a partnership with Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Prince Edward Community Care can arrange for your mail courier en route to keep a watchful eye on your home to help keep you safe. This free service offers added safety and security to those living on rural routes. To participate, call Prince Edward Community Care at 613-476-7493 and leave a detailed message.

Active Living Programs for seniors 60+ – online & on the phone
Active Living Programs are offered by Prince Edward Community Care both online and by telephone. Webinars are held on Thursday afternoons and the May topics include recycling; Food Safety with Sarah Sandham, Registered Dietitian; and The Lost Franklin Expedition with Dr. Andrew Janikowski. May telephone chat topics include: How are you doing?; Community Care services during the pandemic; possibly frauds & scams with Constable Miller; and How does your Garden Grow? with Lise Bois. For the telephone chats a computer is not required. Get active, make friends, be well. Income Tax Program
Prince Edward Community Care volunteers will complete 2019 income tax returns for seniors who live in Prince Edward County. CRA has extended the submission deadline to June 1, 2020. If you are a senior 60+ whose single income is $35,000 or lower or a couple whose household income is $45,000 or lower, you may be eligible for help through this program. Volunteers have been trained by Canada Revenue Agency to complete Income Tax Returns for eligible clients. Volunteers do not complete income tax and benefit returns for: deceased persons; resident of Long-term Care homes; bankrupt individuals; for those with more than $1000 of investment income; for individuals with capital gains/losses; or for people with business or rental income and expenses. There is no charge, donations are encouraged. The Community Care office is closed until further notice and a physically distant procedure is in place. Seniors’ Support TV Show
Watch a new edition of the show “Seniors’ Support” on YourTV. The May 2020 topic covers Dementia Friendly Communities. This show is co-produced by the Executive Directors of Prince Edward Community Care and Community Care for South Hastings. If you miss the show, check your local listings for when it will be shown again. Past episodes of Seniors’ Support are showing on Eastlink Community TV in Picton through a special agreement.

Services currently on hold during COVID-19
Prince Edward Community Care had to place certain services on hold during COVID-19. When it is safe all services will be restarted. These services are currently on hold until further notice: Foot Care Clinics in all locations; Seniors Luncheon Social events; Escorted Transportation (urgent medical rides are still being provided on a limited basis); home maintenance & homemaking, and; in-person active living programs such as Tai Chi and Wii Bowling. The office building at 74A King Street is closed with staff working in home offices. Community Care’s Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street in Picton is also closed. Physical distancing procedures are in place for all services that are currently operating. For information call 613-476-7493 and leave a detailed message so staff can return the call.
