There’s s’no adventure like taking photographs on a winter’s day

Snowfall reduced visibility for 10 photographers capturing images of Milford this week – and that’s just how they like it, for the most part.
Photojournalist Phil Norton has been hosting County Outings for photographers, artists and naturalists for the past six years – more recently expanding to destinations throughout North America – but Milford remains one of his favourite locations to photograph, and lead his photography outings.
“If I had to name the most interesting part of the County, both ecologically and culturally, I would pinpoint Milford on the map,” said Norton. “The village is the heart of an outlying rural community, South Marysburgh, that still holds a resemblance to what much of Ontario was like 50 or more years ago.”
Milford’s beauty is an easy capture in three seasons, but winter provides unique beauty if you’re willing to bundle up.
“Heavy snowfall, reduced visibility, and that’s just the way we like it,” Norton said. “We have learned over the years that the most dramatic photographs and most memorable trips are the ones where the weather surprises us. Who wants boring blue sky and sunshine? Why not rays of light piercing through a dark storm cloud? Or horizontal snow plastering shoreline trees?”
Sometimes, he said, the chance of a good photo is worth frozen fingers.
“For the most part, the photo participants are all game to dress appropriately for minus temperatures, cover camera equipment during snow squalls, and go. That’s how we capture great images and that’s why the photographers keep going out on our winter tours.”
Outings are open to all at a minimal fee and gas sharing. Email phil@philnorton.com
