Electronic waste now accepted at two County waste sites

The County is now accepting electronic waste, free of charge, at both the South Marysburgh (1132 Old Milford Road) and Sophiasburgh (35 County Road 14) waste sites during regular hours of operation.

Electronic waste includes include televisions, computers, monitors, mice, keyboards, printers, radios, speakers, cables, telephones, cell phones, power tools, microwave ovens and small appliances.

Hazardous waste will not be accepted. Hazardous waste must be dropped at the hazardous waste depot in Belleville or at a mobile event.

Council discussed having its own depot in 2022 with municipal staff noting “establishing a permanent hazardous electronic depot would provide some consistency in collection, and may reduce instances of roadside dumping”.

The impacts of community fundraising activities were raised in the 2022 report, since several community groups have held e-waste collection fundraisers over the last 10 years generating charitable donations.

Albert Paschkowiak, the municipality’s environmental services and sustainability supervisor, stated Home Hardware in Picton, which held the most consistent and largest events, supported the transition to a more permanent location. It was stated organizations could still host their own events outside of the permanent location.
