$100,000 grant fuels mentorship and skill-building for youth

A $100,000 grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is being used to launch IGNITE, a new mentorship initiative designed to support youth in Prince Edward County facing complex barriers.

The program is to help youth re-engage with their community through one-on-one mentorship, transportation support, and opportunities to build skills, confidence, and connection.

“Ignite provides vulnerable Prince Edward County youth an opportunity to take ownership in their community by designing and delivering programs that improve quality of life,” said Tyler Allsopp, MPP for Bay of Quinte, who visited theROC Friday, in downtown Picton.

The Trillium Foundation Seed Grant is to be used to support County youth facing barriers such as isolation, mental health challenges, and limited transportation.

“The program offers consistent mentorship, skill-building opportunities, and access to safe spaces and community connections. Grant funds supported program development, mentor training, transportation coordination, and the creation of inclusive environments where youth feel supported and empowered,” said Shannon Collins, Executive Director of theROC Youth Services. “IGNITE is about showing young people that their voices matter and that they have a place in this community. Thanks to this OTF grant, we’re able to create real pathways for youth to lead, connect, and succeed—while also celebrating the volunteers who help make that possible.”

Collins was named executive director earlier this month, having served as the acting role since June 2024 when ROC Founder Darlene Thompson retired.

For more than 25 years, theROC Youth Services has supported youth across Prince Edward County through free programs that promote wellness, education, inclusion, and leadership. With offerings ranging from drop-in support to school-based programming and community partnerships, theROC empowers youth to navigate challenges and reach their full potential.
