‘Friends’ support County’s one library with six branches

The County of Prince Edward Public Library and Archives is a six-branch library system – or, as we call it, “one library with six branches.” This means that no matter where you live, work, or play in Prince Edward County, you can use any of the six branches.

You can borrow a book in Consecon and return it to Milford, call Bloomfield for an item to be sent to Ameliasburgh, book a meeting room in Picton, and research at the Archives in Wellington if you would like. We all work together to provide the best service we can for all of Prince Edward County and you will be warmly welcomed at any of the branches.

The Friends of the Library are dedicated groups of library volunteers who work to support individual branches. They raise funds, champion their local branch, and provide their enthusiasm and energy in supporting their local branches. We’re so grateful for all that they do, and the many ways they truly make a difference.

The groups work together as well, recognizing that supporting the library as a whole is key to the success of every individual branch. When the newest Friends group (Bloomfield) came together, they relied on the expertise and experience of the other groups to decide how best to use their efforts. Members of the Bloomfield group toured each of the six branches to pick up ideas and inspiration, which they found extremely helpful. Members of the Friends of Milford attended a Bloomfield meeting and were tremendously helpful in lending advice and suggestions.

The Friends of Wellington Branch has been in existence for more than 20 years at this point, with some original members still in attendance. Their accomplishments would be impossible to list at this point, with Canada Day and Pumpkinfest book sales, “Passions” series talks, and other events bringing many people into the library. They are also responsible for the gardens and plants outside and inside the library – a feature that receives many compliments.

In Ameliasburgh and Consecon, the two branches are supported by one group of keen volunteers dedicated to supporting these two branches. They lead book sales, help organize and promote events, and much more. The chair of the group, Bev Marr, regularly creates interesting and thought-provoking displays.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN UPDATE: As Canada Post workers are now holding rotating strikes, Interlibrary Loan is once again available in a limited way. The books are sent by mail from library to library across the province, which means we can be impacted by strikes at either the borrowing or lending library. We anticipate that delivery times will be slower and encourage all borrowers to keep a list of titles to request again in the future if needed.
