A bit soured on Puss in Boots but the kids like it

Well, not all is well in the Land of Shrek. First of all, the storied franchise is in a state of merciful suspended animation. Merciful because the last outing was anything less than stellar. Shrek inspired millions to watch animated pictures and it had such a hip wink wink attitude towards its older audience it set a bar that seemed above and beyond.
There have been rumours of a Puss in Boots spin off for a few years and not without a lot of excitement. Puss is Zorro with a hairball. He has all the cool of a latin lover and all the detached disdain of an actual cat.
I was excited.
Ok, now before I go too far, let me tell you which end of the horse I think I am for even reviewing a kids movie with anything other than the usual “they laughed, they bought popcorn, all is well in the kingdom”.
But these guys raised the bar.
They invited me to dinner. Showed me the menu and promised dumplings.
Ok, so it’s a bit of a mess.
There’s this whole weird story line where Puss is an orphan hanging out with his best egg buddy Humpty.
Puss is loyal and true and Humpty is already a bit twisted and bent.
He frames Puss for stealing to make him look bad and put him in exile.
There’s a reconciliation later, but for me it was too little, too late. It’s just hard.
OK, seriously the whole story line is fractured and not in the good way.
Shrek made fun of the fables and Disney endings and this just makes a big mess of it all. Jack and Jill have magic beans and everyone wants a piece of the golden goose and how they all intertwine is moderately amusing.
Dancing seems to be everywhere and there’s a big number at the Glitter Box (imagine that in neon with a burnt out G).
Banderos is funny.
Puss is funny.
Any reference to his spanish roots are funny.
The rest, not so funny.
I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
The kids like it.
There’s enough bathroom jokes to save the day and Puss is not great as a leading man, but it’s enough fun to justify the popcorn.
I was jonesing for some Disney smack and all I got was some scrambled egg.
Hollow fruit from an empty dish.
But then again I realize I really am the south end of a horse headed north.
As always, other opinions are welcome, but wrong. That’s it for this week. The cheque’s in the mail and I’m outta here. Paul
