Abby Emdin earns prestigious TD Scholarship for Community Leadership

She’s known locally as “the worm girl” but Abby Emdin’s much broader vision and action to help others has earned her a prestigious TD Scholarship for Community Leadership valued at up to $70,000.

The West Lake resident co-founded World Without Worms, (with Fiona Emdin and Laura Hallsworth), a student-led effort at Nicholson Catholic College in Belleville to raise funds for school-based deworming programs in India and Africa. They learned that chronic infections decrease school attendance, literacy and life-time earnings of infected students and that the problem has an inexpensive treatment – less than 50 cents per child for medication. World Without Worms has since expanded to other schools in Ontario, BC and to Waterloo and Queen’s universities. To date, the initiative has raised more than $16,000.
Abby also tutors and volunteers at QHC Belleville General Hospital and is co-president of her school’s student council and Best Buddies chapter. She has participated in two humanitarian trips to Jamaica. She also tutors students, volunteers at her local hospital and is a member of her school’s soccer and ski teams. Abby plans to pursue her interests in international medicine and research.

TD Bank Group is recognizing 20 of Canada’s most promising students with the prestigious merit scholarships valued at up to $70,000 per student. Each scholarship includes up to $10,000 for tuition per year and $7,500 a year toward living expenses; an offer of paid summer employment at TD for up to four years, mentorship opportunities and invitations to annual gatherings, networking opportunities and events.

This year’s recipients were recognized for addressing a range of issues on both a local and global scale, ranging from pollution and human rights to health and cross-cultural understanding.

The scholarship is designed to recognize and support Canada’s emerging leaders who have demonstrated innovation and initiative while making a difference in their community. Eligible students are in their final year of high school, or CEGEP in Quebec.  To date, TD has awarded more than $17 million to 340 students.

“We are thrilled to recognize these exceptional students and community leaders with the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership. They offer us a glimpse of our country’s bright future,” said Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group. “TD is proud to support those who make a positive impact in their community.”
