All gifts make a difference with PECMHF!

Appeal-Letter-1As the holidays draw near, what traditions will your family treasure? Baking homemade cookies? Reconnecting with old friends? Gathering family around your dining room table? For most of us, the holiday traditions we cherish are reminders of what truly matters.

What if your family had to suspend those holiday traditions in order to battle a serious illness? Imagine the isolation and disappointment you might feel as a hospitalized patient. The hardship that may follow seems magnified at this time of year and is all the more meaningful when our own are affected.

We truly hope we can count on your generosity again this holiday season…

This year our goal is to raise funds for telemetry equipment. This is an urgently needed upgrade for cardiac monitoring on our Hospital’s Inpatient Unit which was last updated in 1999. We have three designated beds where patients can be attached to a stationary cardiac monitor as well as four portable monitors (telemetry units). At any given time there are usually two to four patients being monitored and sometimes all seven monitors are in use.

The type of patients monitored are those admitted with heart attacks, angina, congestive heart failure, drug overdoses, electrolyte imbalances, arrhythmias, and patients before and after heart surgery.

“Having up to date cardiac monitoring equipment allows the physicians of PECMH to manage patients we would otherwise need to transfer to another hospital directly from the Emergency Department. We can safely monitor their cardiac condition, send them onto Kingston within the next day or two for further assessment, and often return them either to PECMH or directly to home. The majority of their stay is therefore with familiar caregivers and closer to home,” explains Dr. Koval.

Our ability to provide high quality health care and state of the art medical equipment at PECMH is made possible with your support.

Your gift will brighten the season for patients and families and reinforce the spirit of giving we know is important to you.

Dr. Don Koval, Division Head for Medicine,
Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital
