Ameliasburgh shows another great weekend

Roblin Park in Ameliasburgh was host to the 37th annual Prince Edward Auto Club Street Meet as well as a Bake, Craft & Car Boot Sale held by the Ameliasburgh Hall Working Committee to raise funds to refurbish the Town Hall. Campers showcasing vehicles spent the weekend sharing with other auto enthusiasts.

Despite dire warnings from the weatherman the 37th annual Street Meet at Ameliasburg hosted by the Prince Edward Auto Club was another success.

“We offer a little something extra for the participants and their families,” said Prince Edward Auto Club president Dave Grimmon. “We try very hard to ensure that this is a family-friendly event. The enormous success of the Street Meet is thanks to our members. We added four new members this year, the youngest being my six-week-old grandson.”

This year fireworks, volleyball for the kids, a diner and dance were among the activities for participants. Driving skills were tested in the potato race and the rod balance. The rod balance requires the drivers and a passenger attempt to balance their cars on a giant teeter-totter. They have three minutes and are timed for the total time that the balance doesn’t touch the ground.

The Prince Edward Auto Club is a non-for-profit organization. Over they years members have held food drives, donated cash to the Prince Edward County Food Bank, provided support to the local firefighters and support Relay for Life as well as other worthy causes and individuals.

For the third year Jim Benvie, of Picton, encouraged participant and spectator alike to ‘Fill the ’55’ for the Food Bank. Jim is the proud owner of a ’55 Chevrolet Short-box pick-up truck.

“We are always pleased with response,” said Benvie. “We (my family) feel it is just the right thing to do and appreciate the support of all, including the Prince Edward Auto Club.”

More than 600 spectators came to view the 232 cars over the three-day event.
