Ann Fales the favourite at A Stitch in Time

Ann Fales work was the Peoples' Choice at this year's Prince Edward County Quilters' Guild show. She received the Viewers' Choice for Favourite Quilt for "Culmination" and also the Viewers' Choice Award for Favourite Wall Hanging "Inside Passage". "Culmination" also won the Best in Show Ribbon from the Canadian Quilters' Association.

Connie Fowler promised her husband she would return his Christmas present “in a couple of days” and she did – with a giant first place ribbon attached.
Fowler’s “Log Cabin for Peter” quilt won first-place in the hand-quilted division at last weekend’s Prince Edward County Quilters’ Guild’s ‘A Stitch in Time’ quilt show.
“I started quilting it because I was recovering from foot surgery,” laughs Fowler. “When I told him I wanted to enter it in the show he made me promise I would return it to the bed.”
Fowler also won a second place award for a wall hanging titled Welcome to PEC.
More than 300 works of stitched art were displayed at the Prince Edward Community Centre and examined by more than 1,500 visitors.
“The show is a massive effort and that is why we only hold it every two years,” said co-convenor Mary Tucker. “Many quilt shows are held every three years, but we know people really look forward to it so the two-year format works well.”
The weekend also featured demonstrations, a merchant mall, boutique, silent auction, scissor sharpening and a tea room.
The Prince Edward County Guild has about 80 members who meet the second Wednesday of each month (except summer) at Pinecrest School.
“We’ve gained a lot of new members recently,” Tucker said. “And their work is also on display here this weekend.”

Sporting the guild's new aprons are committee members Mary Tucker, Jane Spilchen, Lynn Vince, Rosanna Worden Hawker and Carol Harvey. Mary and Lynn were co-conveners of this year's event.

Mary Andrews Minigan taught her sister-in-law Pat and Pat’s daughter Caitlin the art of quilting while they watched the winter Olympics on television.
They decided to make a quilt for Caitlin’s 21st birthday and put in the last stitch of the quilt top while watching Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir  capture Canada’s first Olympic ice dance gold.
“It was really late, about 1:30 a.m. but we did it. The quilt’s backing, borders and binding were completed just in time for the show.”
They named their quilt “Girls Gone Wild” and won first place in the Third Party Quilted category.
Meanwhile, Mary Andrews Minigan also won an honourable mention prize in the Innovative Design category for her self-portrait quilt “Just Mary”. It took her about three months to create the hand and machine-stitched wall hanging depicting her as a gardener surrounded by her hostas at the Consecon Lake cabin. She also won second prize in Innovative Design for a wall hanging titled “Black Magic”.
In House guest artists included Joan Reive, of Bayside, who has many years experience in teaching art classes and workshops for visual artists, quilters and needle artists.
Reive had award-winning quilts on display, but her favourite was “Peggy’s Cove” a work inspired by trips to see her daughter, in Halifax.
“I call it a multiple view landscape because it is done from one picture, machine quilted, hand-appliqued and fused.”
Peggy’s Cove received an honourable mention award for “Excellence in Representational Wall Quilt” at the Canadian Quilters’ Association National Juried Show held in April in Calgary.
The County’s Lyne Lusk was also an In-House Artist at the show. Taking many workshops with international quilt teachers, she honed her skills as a creative fibre artist. Her work has also been exhibited at the National Quilt Show, provincial shows and art exhibitions. She has won two Ontario Crafts Council Awards and a Juror’s Award.

Susan Hoy was the winner of the quilt raffle.
