Are you at risk for diabetes? Take the two-minute test

Are you at risk? Put aside just two minutes this month to find out. Click this image to visit and click “start” to begin. The test will be available until Nov. 30

In Prince Edward County, there are more than 2,000 residents living with diabetes. They are among more than three million people across the nation with the disease – one of the highest rates among 34 countries studied in a report released this week by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

The report also states Canada is performing poorly in managing diabetes risk factors – including diet, obesity rates and levels of physical activity.

The CIHI states countries that have implemented policies in a bid to curb diabetes rates – like France’s tax on sugar-sweetened beverages – have had a lasting impact on consumer behaviour. The Canadian Diabetes Association has asked the government of Canada to support the same tax on sugar-sweetened beverages because of the connection between high-consumption of these drinks and the development of type 2 diabetes.

The Prince Edward Family Health Team Diabetes Education Program is available to support people with diabetes and their families with clinic locations in Picton and Wellington.

PEFHT educators are Suzanne Staley (Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator), Kimberly Storms (Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator), and Sarah Sandham (Registered Dietitian and Certified Personal Training Specialist).

PEFHT-diabetes-adThe team promotes self- management through education to adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their families in the following areas:
• Understanding diabetes
• Healthy eating
• Healthy lifestyles
• Self-managing your diabetes
• Insulin and other treatment options
• How to use your blood glucose meter
• How to use your insulin pen
• Recognizing symptoms of low or high blood sugar
• Stanford Diabetes Self-Management group (Spring and Fall Sessions)

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. It is never too early (or too late) to learn more about healthy eating and active living to reduce your risk or help manage diabetes.
