Art in the County will celebrate its silver anniversary this year at a new location at the Picton Armoury, 206 Main St (enter off Mary St., use Studio Ex entrance), Picton.

The Prince Edward County Arts Council’s premier art exhibition moves to the Armoury Mall as the Books & Company building which was home for the show’s past six years has been sold, and the Lipson Room space on the second floor will be undergoing renovations. The Armoury Mall is also under some renovation but will have space on the ground level (below street level) to accommodate the show.

Three Canadian art professionals will serve as jurors choosing the show’s content. Wendy Cain is a printmaker, papermaker and past associate professor of art and past chair of printmaking at the Ontario College of Art. Daniel Hughes is a Kingston portrait artist and artist Olexander Wlasenko, is curator at Station Gallery in Whitby.

As well, they will select the five Jurors’ Choice awards and five Honourable Mention awards.

Canadian painter and sculptor Otto Rogers, a County resident, will again choose a recipient of the Otto Rogers Award for Excellence.

The People’s Choice Award, sponsored this year by Elizabeth Crombie, will be determined by visitor ballots during the exhibition.

The Art in the County organizing committee has also launched a new ‘Community Art Builder Award’ in honour of the show’s 25th anniversary.

Sponsored by Chestnut Park Real Estate, nominees are to be chosen by County residents who want to honour a person who has enriched community life through the arts. In this inaugural year, the $250 monetary award will focus on visual arts and is to be presented at the show’s opening.

Art in the County will showcase its wide range of media – including watercolour, acrylic, oil and encaustic paintings, sculpture, fibre, wood, photography, ceramics, glass and more, from June 22 to July 8. In celebration of Canada Day, admission to the show will be free of charge, and the Elizabeth Crombie Real Estate Team will be providing birthday cake and refreshments.

Over the quarter century Art in the County has showcased more than 20,000 works, attracted more than 50,000 visitors and facilitated more than $280,000 in sales for artists in the community.
