Aspiring teen graphic artist earns arts awards

An aspiring graphic artist in the County earned $500 awards from the County’s arts council and Picton Kiwanis club.

At the annual general meeting of the arts council, Emily Clark was presented both the Carol Burrill Arts Award and the Kiwanis award for visual arts.

Artist Peta Hall took the lead in ensuring the arts council honour Burrill, a well-known local artist who died suddenly in October 2013, by renaming its student award in her honour. The award also honours donations made in Carol’s memory

Clark will be graduating from Prince Edward Collegiate Institute and pursuing a three-year education in graphic design in September at Durham College in Oshawa. She would like to become an art director in the graphic design business.

Clark has had an interest in graphic design since elementary school where her design for the school yearbook was chosen for the cover. This accomplishment marked the beginning of her passion for design and has eventually led to her chosen career direction in graphic arts.

She has been involved in the creation of the yearbook at PECI, and has created and written a magazine article featuring the County Clippers basketball program, created a business logo, and designed a bulletin board for the Prince Edward Family Health team to promote Diabetes Day.
Clark was recommended for the award by her teachers at PECI who described her as a mature, hardworking individual who is an active volunteer in her school and the broader community.

The student award was founded seven years ago when the council decided to set up a fund to support and encourage students continuing on to post secondary education in the arts.

Greta Kristiansen was presented with the PEC Arts Council Volunteer Recogntion Award by Judy Kent, past president of the arts council.
The honour recognizes her contributions made to the arts in the County over the years.

She has been treasurer of the Festival of Trees, the Amazing Adventure, Arts on Main and the PEC Quilters Guild. Under the PEC Arts Council umbrella, she has been a member of the PEC Studio Tour as an artist, treasurer and co-chair.

She has been treasurer of the Maker’s Hand since its inception, vice-chair of the PEC Arts Council for five years and treasurer for the past five years.
