Automated system streamlines burn permit calls

The County’s fire department has activated a new automated burn permit system with an aim to increase efficiencies for residents, and the department’s ability to track and respond to permit activations,

“The new system was designed by the Prince Edward County Information Technology
Department and will significantly reduce the volume of calls received by the fire
department,” says Fire Chief Scott Manlow. “These calls can run upwards of 200 a day
during peak periods, which occupy all of the department’s four phone lines. Reducing these
burn permit and burn ban related calls to the fire department’s general lines will facilitate
staff response to fire and emergency related inquiries.”

The system will also improve communication with residents by reminding them to dial 911 in
the event of an emergency, as well as providing up-to-date information in the event of a
burn ban.

Burn permits ($15 for the year) must be purchased in person at the fire hall, Shire Hall or the libraries. Once in place, residents activate their burn permit by dialing in on a touch tone phone. Users can connect with the automated system by dialing 613-476-7232
or 613-962-3497, where they will be prompted to notify the fire department of their
intention to burn by entering their four digit burn permit number. Users who do not have a
touch tone phone are directed to dial 613-476-2345, which will connect the individual
directly to the fire department and allow them to activate their permit.

“The automated Burn Permit System demonstrates another step the County is taking to offer
more options to our customers and improve their access to our services,” says Mayor Peter
Mertens. “This aligns with our goal of a renewed focus on customer service throughout the
municipality.”
