Award winning youth choir has County roots

The award-winning youth choir “Young Singers” from the Durham region will return to Prince Edward County to perform in a fundraiser for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The dynamic community childrens’ choir is under the direction of Anna Lynn Murphy (nee Walker, of Milford).
The choir will perform their enthusiastic repertoire on Saturday, June 11 at Picton United Church at 7pm featuring local performers, Trinity (Kim Inch, Renie Thompson and Jeanette Arsenault).
“We were honoured when Trinity joined us in singing ‘Arise’ and ‘This Is My Canada’ for our Christmas show last December in Ajax’, Murphy said.
Murphy takes great pride in calling herself a “County girl”. She is the daughter of Donald and Phyllis Walker and sister to Glendon and Donna Faye and grew up on the family homestead near Milford.

Her first piano teacher was Evelyn Moore and her first voice teacher Patricia Calnan, both of whom shared their love of music and joy of teaching. Murphy made her singing debut at Milford Town Hall in 1959 at the local Saturday Night Variety Show and enjoyed ongoing appearances to an enthusiastic “and often forgiving audience” for many years until a time when she had gained enough confidence to venture further afield.

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Queen’s University. Following a successful career in Toronto in arts administration and artist management, she now resides in Ajax where she shares her love of singing and her energy with the youth in her community at the Artistic Director of Young Singers.

While maintaining a private voice studio, she is also in demand as an adjudicator and choral/vocal clinician, as she shares her expertise with many school boards and festivals. She is Music Director at St. Dunstan of Canterbury Anglican Church, Scarborough.
