Banners a pick-me-up for Picton light poles

Artist Carl Wiens with BIA chair Robyn Molyneaux and the new Picton light pole banners.

Light poles in historic downtown Picton received a pick-me-up last week as the result of a collaboration between the Picton Business Improvement Association and internationally-acclaimed artist Carl Wiens.
New banners designed by Wiens now adorn the posts as part of the BIA’s onging branding activities aimed at celebrating the former town’s rich and unique history.
“Over the past two years, the BIA has continued to introduce to the streetscape an array of street art and furniture that is reminiscent of days of old,” says BIA Executive Director Roni Summers Wickens. “This includes the introduction of 10 new benches, 10 new ‘hitching’ posts for bicycles and 80 new banners which make up part of its onging downtown revitalization activities.”
“We are so fortunate to benefit from the high calibre of art available to us,” says BIA chair Robyn Molyneaux. “Our community is now able to benefit every single day through the introduction of these new banners.”
The banners feature one of four works Wiens created with depictions of Macaulay Museum, The Regent Theatre, the court house and Crystal Palace. His images are also on the welcome signs at highways 49 and 33 and at the Glenora Ferry.
“Creativity can be daunting at times,” says Wiens. “Sometimes it’s like reading a compass without a needle.”
Yet the artist who works from a small barn that houses a fleet of bicycles on the first floor and a big, bright studio on the second “clearly does not lack for creativity,” notes Summers Wickens, “and for that, we are especially grateful.”
Wiens’ work has been featured in The New York Times, Esquire, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Forbes, Macleans and numerous other publications.
