Bay of Quinte New Democrats select Joanne Belanger as candidate for June election

New Democrats turned out Sunday to name school chaplain and community leader, Joanne Belanger, as the NDP candidate for the upcoming provincial election in the riding of Bay of Quinte.

“I am thrilled to be joining Andrea Horwath’s NDP team,” said Belanger. “The Wynne Liberals – and Conservatives before them – have done enough damage to the public services that families depend on, while driving up our cost of living.

“Today, families and communities are struggling with overcrowded hospitals, a long-term care system in crisis, and sky-high hydro bills that are set to go up again right after the election.

“It’s time for families to stop having to settle for bad or worse when it comes to our provincial leaders. It’s time to vote for what we really need – a party and a leader who will put people back at the heart of government decisions. That’s why I’m running for Andrea Horwath’s NDP.”

Belanger was a high school chaplain for the past 12 years at her alma mater – Nicholson Catholic College in Belleville. She was a trustee on the Hastings & Prince Edward Roman Catholic School Board and represented Sidney Township and Frankford from 1994-1997.

She worked for parent inclusivity on school councils and continues to support improved special education resources. She also served as a counsellor for 26 years in various locations including the Military Family Resource Centre at CFB Trenton, Counselling Services of Belleville and District, and in private practice.

Belanger is a long-standing resident of the Bay of Quinte. She was born in Belleville and resides with her husband Terry in north Quinte West where they raised their seven children, and are grandparents to eight grandchildren.

Belanger said the commitments Andrea Horwath and the NDP have already made are inspiring.

“Among them are universal pharmacare and dental care, a ‘find-and-fix’ public inquiry designed to improve conditions in long-term care homes, creating the province’s first Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, and Andrea Horwath’s plan to put Hydro One back in public hands.

“People in this community are excited that change for the better is on the way,” said Belanger. “And I’m ready to work with Andrea Horwath to deliver.”

MPP Todd Smith is the incumbent, representing the Conservatives while PEC mayor Robert Quaiff is carrying the Liberal banner.
