Bank supports the bank

It certainly wasn’t unusual for Beth Thompson to celebrate her 93rd birthday at the Picton United Church County Food Bank. She has been supporting the food bank for the past 27 years. In 1983 as leader of missions and stewardship at Picton United Church, she was among the founders of the food bank program.
“We thought it was going to be a temporary measure at the time,” Thompson said. “But, here we are still – helping people.”
Bev was on hand to receive help from others as Denise Linnett, a Scotiabank retiree and Chris Skinner, Scotiabank manager, presented food bank director Pat Romkey with $1,000 from Scotiabank’s volunteer program for staff.

Boundless capacity for caring and giving: letter

Dear Friends of the Picton United Church County Food Bank
The “soul” of a people is a familiar term. It may refer to the music, art, dance or literature of a nation or community. In the matter of Prince Edward County it can only mean a boundless capacity, whether for neighbour or stranger, for truly caring and giving from the heart.
We at the Picton United Church County Food Bank turn our thoughts to those who have given tirelessly of their time, generosity, resources and caring. Without the support of our volunteers, service groups, supermarkets, farmers, businesses and individuals, and yes, our children and youth, we could never have served the nearly 4,000 residents that benefited from your help last year. Nor could we proudly mark 27years of success.
We are a Food Bank, but we are also able to provide clothing, books, energy guide appliances, utensils, indeed almost anything a household might need. These items we can usually pick-up and if we can’t give it away we make sure it goes to another agency that can find a home for it. Landfill is not an option!
That so many continue to give above and beyond what might be expected is an inspiration to us all.
A testament to this is your response to our newly established Pet Food Bank. From the animals, and myself, thank you and may God bless.
Sincerely
Patricia Romkey, Director
& Volunteers
