BQRAP helps fund habitat projects

BQRAPA $44,000 investment by the  Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan’s (BQRAP) Habitat Enhancement Program (HEP), has provided funding assistance and technical support to 13 landowners around the Bay of Quinte.

The program allocated $44,545 funding for: five livestock fencing projects, three plant buffer zones, two shoreline naturalizations, two well projects and a habitat pond creation project. These projects were completed to improve water quality and enhance, protect or restore habitat for fish and wildlife to highlight BQRAP’s mandate to help to keep the Bay of Quinte a vibrant and healthy ecosystem.

“Each of these projects provides a significant benefit to the Bay of Quinte,” said Christine Jennings, of Quinte Conservation. “Shoreline naturalization, using native vegetation, improves water quality, provides shelter and food for wildlife, supports spawning beds for fish, provides erosion control and flood protection, and is visually pleasing.
“Fencing projects keep livestock away from shorelines, this helps to reduce erosion problems and keeps nutrients and bacterial contaminants from entering the water.
“Planting/Buffer zones create wildlife habitat, and the deep roots systems of native plant species help to prevent erosion and filter runoff.
“Habitat pond creation projects provide habitat for a variety of species of flora and fauna. Well projects provide alternative water sources for livestock keeping them out of local waterways, improving water quality.”

The next funding period for this program will be in the spring of 2014. In 1985, the International Joint Commission (a Canadian – American Great Lakes watch-dog), under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, identified the Bay of Quinte as one of 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern …a pollution hot-spot. The Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan and its partners are, successfully, under-taking actions to rehabilitate the Bay. Click here to find out more.
