Bravo! national awards for school board and learning foundation

Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation have received national recognition for two initiatives launched during the 2010-2011 school year.
Nominations were submitted to the BRAVO! Awards program of the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE).
“It is an honour to receive national recognition. I am very proud of the staff who worked on these projects,” said Dwayne Inch, Chair of the Board. “At Hastings and Prince Edward DSB, we are committed to providing the best programs and services to help each student reach their full potential. Being recognized for excellence by external sources confirms that we are on the right track.”
Maribeth deSnoo, Executive Director for the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, received an Award of Excellence in the special event category for The Agribition for Grade 4 students. The event was held in October 2010 to (re-)introduce Grade 4 students to agriculture and farming practices, past and present, to help them fully appreciate how food is produced. The judges commented that the nomination contained detailed goals and objectives outlined explicitly with well-supported conclusions. They added that the submission was powerful, all-inclusive and persuasive.
“It’s a great honour for us to win this award and to be recognized at the national level for our work,” said Elaner Pound, chair of the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation. “The purpose of The Learning Foundation is to enhance education for our students, and this is an excellent example.”

Kerry Donnell, Communications Officer and Erna Sorensen, Curriculum Coordinator, with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, received an Award of Distinction in the Electronic/Interactive category. The online booklet, Planning for Grade 9 . . . Taking the Next Step, was created as an online booklet containing detailed information for students and parents about making the transition from Grade 8 to 9. The judges commented that the nomination “hit the mark, was focused and directly applicable to students and parents.” They added the evaluation methodology was logical, well-grounded and detailed.

The CACE BRAVO! Awards are a source of both individual and group prestige. The awards program showcases Canada’s best work in the field of educational communications. BRAVO! Awards of Excellence, Distinction and Merit are presented annually at the CACE conference. Excellence is equivalent to gold, Distinction to silver and Merit to bronze. Entries are judged by an independent panel of communications professionals based on research, planning, execution and evaluation.
