BYST off to provincial team championships

The Belleville Youth Swim Team returned from a competition that included multiple teams from Ontario and Quebec. Sixteen athletes participated in the meet that was full of fast racing.

“There were many outstanding performances, which is exactly what the team wants as they head into Ontario Division III Team Championships from December 14 to 16,” said Brandon Oates, head coach.

Katelyn Cairns lead the pack with two first place finishes in the 200m butterfly and 200m IM. She also came in second in the 100m butterfly and third in the 400m IM, dropping almost 15 seconds. Isaac Jarvis won both the 100m backstroke and the 400m freestyle, while also finishing third in the 50m freestyle. Liam Jarvis took first place in the 50m freestyle, plus he achieved second in the 200m breaststroke by taking off 45 seconds, and third in the 200m freestyle. Brianna Tipping earned first place in the 200m breaststroke where she took off over six seconds. She also placed second in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, plus finished third in the 100m freestyle. Lauren Taylor won the 200m IM and came in second in the 50m freestyle, as well as third in the 200m freestyle.

Lobsang Wangkang swam to a second place finish in the 100m backstroke and earned third spot in both the 50m and 200m freestyle. Melissa Dingle placed third in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Ben Isaak finished third overall in both the 50m and 200m breaststroke events. Philip Savic raced to second spot in the 100m backstroke and placed third in the 100m freestyle. David Savic achieved a second in the 100m backstroke and third in the 50m backstroke. Ryan Jarvis came in second in the 200m freestyle. BYST athletes with 100 percent best times included Ashley Allaire, Mackenzie Blagojevic, Marko Savic and David Savic. Chloe Martineau and Rylan Miller also had great performances.

Next Friday, a 25 member roster travels on a bus to provincial championship meet at the Etobicoke Olympium. BYST is currently in Division III and is striving to finish top three overall in team point standings in order to move up to Division II. They are up against 37 other clubs in Ontario and are preparing to swim fast enough to post impressive results.
