April and Wayne Newhook of Carrying Place are $250,000 richer after winning with a $10 Instant Gifts of Gold scratch game.
Wayne, 67, was playing his ticket in the middle of the night when he discovered they won.
“I’ve been wrong in the past, so I didn’t say anything to April until the next morning,” he shared while the pair was at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up their winnings. “April was headed out the next morning, so I handed her some tickets to check while at the store and casually said, ‘Oh there’s a $250,000 winner in there,” he laughed.
April, 62, thought her husband was pulling her leg and didn’t think much of it until she scanned the ticket for herself.
“When it said Big Winner, I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock!”
The grandparents plan to pay off their mortgage, do some renovations and purchase a new vehicle.
“We’ll also save some for a family trip,” they smiled.
The winning ticket was purchased at MacEwen on Main Street, Wellington.
