Celebrate outstanding County volunteers April 10

More than 50 County residents nominated for their volunteer efforts will be honoured at the fourth annual Prince Edward County Volunteer Recognition Awards.

Winners in each of four categories announced during an awards luncheon at the celebration’s host Wellings of Picton on Wednesday, April 10th during National Volunteers Week. The public is invited.

“Congratulations to all of the nominees for the Prince Edward County Volunteer Recognition Awards for 2019. All of their contributions and dedication make Prince Edward County a better place,” said Rachel Henry, General Manager at the Wellings of Picton. “It is truly awe-inspiring how many volunteer hours are spent here each year, and the resounding impact each volunteer makes. A big thank you to our judges this year, Linda Downey and Doug and Evelyn Sloane who were recognized last year as winners of the Wellings Caring County Award and Wellings Lifetime Achievement Awards.”

This years’ nominees are:
Wellings County Community Leadership Award – This award recognizes the individual who, drawing upon their unique leadership skills, has shown exemplary guidance in a volunteer role, led volunteer groups, and/or have taken a lead role in finding solutions to local challenges.
• Gail Robinson – nominated for her 20 years of volunteerism for her tireless work with the Loyalist Humane Society.
• Colleen Galway – nominated for her continuous impact she has made with the 851 Prince Edward Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.
• Sandra Latchford – nominated for her countless volunteer hours with numerous organizations such as PEC Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Glenwood Cemetery to name a few.
• Deborah Troop – nominated for her caring contributions to the PECMH Mammography clinic and the PECMH Auxillary.
Wellings Lifelong Achievement Award – This award is given to an outstanding individual who has tirelessly dedicated their life to volunteering, inspired other volunteers and made a significant impact on the community through their exceptional achievements through volunteering.
• Barbara Closson – Barbara has volunteered with the Picton Shelter for 19 years and been an integral part of the organization.
• Marianne Malachowski – a lifelong volunteer who has contributed to countless organizations in Prince Edward County from Hospice to the Historical Society, the Regent Theatre to the PEC Festival of Trees, and many others.
• Anne Kuipers – nominated for her invaluable contribution to the Sonrise Christian Academy since 1986.

Wellings Caring Group or Duo Award – These volunteers continually show outstanding compassion in their volunteer role and have inspired others to do the same. This award brings to light the example set by the kind-heartedness and engagement that make up the fabric of the County character. This award will highlight a collective effort by a group (two or more contributing members) who have come together to make a difference in our community.
• The Regent Theatre Foundation Board Sponsorship Committee who tireless raise funds vital to the theatre. This group is comprised of: Bob Muir, Ursula Solecki, Gord Parsons, Mary Tucker, Borys Holowacz, Helen Fearman, Pauline Morissette, Carolynn Whiteley, Helen Morris, Rob Legge, Dewey Larratt-Smith, Marilyn Kennedy.

• This group is nominated for its hard work to keep the Loyalist Humane Society PEC running smoothly: Jacqueline Hamilton, Barbara Flieler, Monica Joyce, Paula Furniss, Janine Fox, Kim McDougall, Carol McCullough, Sue McKinney, Paula Kamminga, Sierra and Glenn Dryden, Robert Whittleton, Vanessa Pandos, Lorna MacDonald, Sylvia and Gary Ollsen, Becky Williams, Dee Hazel, Gilles Robert, Gail Henderson, Wanda Lou Quirk, Lynn Watson, Kathy Baker, Doreen Britton, Janet O’Brien, Trisha Matthews, Collin Sills, Joan Leckman, Angela Finlay, Nancy Ryan, Ingrid Pierson, Clinton Loyst, Nancy Crawford, Beverley Arbuthnot, John Pepper, Fran Renoy, Dolores Wallace, Darlene Johnston, Elizabeth Fahringer, Lorain Sine, Anne Moffat, Lynn Webber, Bessie Villeneuve and Dorothy Fraleigh.
